José Villalobos
Artwork Description
José proposes a series of works that reflect on his experience as a young homosexual in a conservative and religious household. In his youth, when he first began to explore his sexuality, José would hide gay pornographic magazines beneath the unused vents found in the floor of his house. With the work developed for this project, the artist abstracts elements of this memory—vents, carpets, and secrets—into a series of wooden boxes. Behind the vent in each box lies an additional element: a phrase, a photograph, a drawing, alluding not only to José’s youth but also to the contemporary experience of many homosexuals who, even in adulthood, must still hide parts of their lives in social, family, or professional settings. Additionally, the vent invites the viewer to become part of the piece, their gaze representing the voyeurism and prying curiosity that many in the community continue to face.
