Artwork Description

Spiral City (2002) is one of Melanie Smith's (Poole, UK, 1965) most iconic video pieces. As is typical of her work, the video—filmed from a helicopter spiraling over a marginal neighborhood in Mexico City—was both the result and inspiration of a broad conceptual and formal investigation into the megalopolis that expanded to a large series of photographs and large format paintings. Smith deconstructed and abstracted the urban grid to show the structures underlying the city's economic, social, and anthropological tensions in visual and aesthetic terms. The paintings included in Estación Material Vol. 4 are being shown publicly for the first time.
